Torquay, England — 6 March 2024
In the quaint coastal town of Torquay, nestled along the rugged cliffs overlooking the English Channel, The Headland Hotel stood as a beacon of luxury and tranquillity. However, on a chilly Christmas Eve in 2022, the serenity of the season was shattered by an unexpected calamity.
As the flames raged through The Headland Hotels kitchen on that fateful Christmas Eve, it wasn’t just the physical structure that was in jeopardy, but the safety and well-being of its staff and guests. In the face of danger, the hotel team jumped into action with unwavering determination and selflessness.
Throughout the night, as the fire threatened to consume everything in its path, the hotel team remained steadfast, ensuring the safe evacuation of all guests. Despite the chaos and uncertainty, they worked tirelessly to assist guests with their belongings, guiding them to safety with calm and reassurance.
Among those leading the charge were Providence team members Dagmar Jungbauer, Danielle McGhee, and Tristan Jungbauer, whose dedication and bravery were unwavering. They exemplified the true spirit of hospitality, putting the safety of others above their own.
The flames tore through the heart of the hotel, leaving behind a charred and broken kitchen. The immediate aftermath was one of shock and despair, but amidst the chaos, there was a glimmer of hope. Providence Hotels, renowned for their unwavering commitment to excellence, wasted no time in initiating the recovery process.
Leading the charge was Danie Bester, Group Facilities Manager, whose expertise and swift action were instrumental in navigating through the crisis. Alongside him, Thom Hughes, Head of Food and Beverage, brought forth his innovative design ideas to revitalise the hotel’s culinary spaces. Together with Dagmar Jungbauer, Group Director of Operations, they orchestrated a remarkable transformation that would defy all odds.
Out of the ashes emerged a new vision for The Headland Hotel. Gone were the remnants of destruction, replaced instead by a rejuvenated ambiance. The once-charred kitchen now stood as a testament to resilience, boasting state-of-the-art equipment and impeccable design, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Bester, Hughes, and Jungbauer.
But their vision extended beyond just the kitchen. The public areas of the hotel underwent a remarkable metamorphosis, receiving a beautiful makeover. Under the guidance of Providence Hotels’ dynamic trio, the entrance and gallery lounge was reimagined, exuding an air of sophistication and luxury.
The refurbishment was not merely a cosmetic enhancement but a symbol of the hotel’s triumphant resurgence. It was a testament to the spirit of Providence Hotels and The Headland Hotel’s commitment to excellence.
In the face of adversity, The Headland Hotel has emerged stronger than ever, a beacon of hope and inspiration for all who walk through its doors.
As The Headland Hotel welcomes guests once again, it does so with newfound vigour and splendour. The scars of the fire may still linger, but they serve as a reminder of the resilience that lies at the core of this esteemed establishment.
